Kilkenny 50 Arklow 7
Leinster Cup 2nd Round 5/3/11
Kilkenny Under 14s made sure the long journey back from Arklow was a happy one last Saturday by convincingly winning this Leinster Cup second round match. Most of the scoring damage was inflicted during the first half as the away side ran in six tries, four of which were converted by out half Jake McDonald.
Some sweeping team moves were finished off from close range by second rows Noel Whelan and Eoin Clarkson as well as Number 8 Daniel O’Connor before right wing Michael Ryan punished a blocked down Arklow clearance by racing in from 15 metres. The pick of the tries though were both scored by left wing Shane Stapleton, who displayed electric pace up his touchline when released with beautifully timed passes from his centre, Lyndon Brannigan.
Having turned around 38 points to nil down at half time, Arklow showed heart to get the first try of the second half after 10 minutes but any thoughts of a mini revival were firmly squashed when Noel Whelan, now playing at Number 8, took advantage of a strike against the head from an Arklow 22 metre scrum to power his way over under the posts 5 minutes later. Michael Ryan finished the scoring when he nipped in for his second score by the left corner flag in the last play of the game.
All twenty players contributed something to this comprehensive victory in which Noel Whelan gave a stand out display, leading the tackle count, carrying aggressively and scoring two tries.
