U-19 Leinster League, 17/10/09 in Foulkstown
Kilkenny 0 - 42 Wicklow
Perfect conditions for this game as KK hoping to get their season on track. WW kicked off then robbed the ball back and held on to it for almost 5 mins. Only good tackling from Jason Nugent Hugh O Brien, Eammon Carrollann and Denis Hogan kept them at bay. The pressure finally told after 8 mins. when KK were penalised for a high tackle, WW found touch and forced over the line for the opener, (converted),
After the kick off KK put together a few phases of forward play and put WW under some pressure, but failed to capitalise after they were awarded a pen. and failed to find touch. KK continued to press and squandered another good chance after getting another pen. in WW territory Micheal Dunne went with no support and got isolated and the ball was turned over.
As KK continued to have a good spell Hugh OBrien broke into the WW half unloaded to Capt Emmet Lynch who but for a great defensive tackle was clear. Then WW struck again on 15mins with their no. 8 followed a good kick through to gather and crash over.(converted)
From the kick off KK got a penalty and scrum half Denis Hogan place a fine kick 10 meters from WW line, KK did not take advantage though as they lost the lineout. WW broke down field and KK again gave away a pen. 25 ms out under pressure which the WW scrum half converted.25 mins
WW were dominant for the rest of the half, their rucking and counter rucking was far more effective than KK who were much too slow to the break down, but for some great tackling, particularly by Peter Walsh on the WW no. 8, and at times from Paddy o Kieffe, Shane Brennan, and Evan Cass, the score would have been a lot worse. 0-17
KK started the second half playing a lot better in the loose, unfortunately their set pieces, particularly the lineout did not function, which limited the backs opportunity to attack. After 50 mins WW kicked a pen. down the line and scored their 3rd try from the resulting lineout.(unconverted).
Things did not improve when their lock Shane Brennan got harshly yellow carded KK heads dropped and WWs Leinster No.8 scored 3 unanswered tries (all converted)
KK did mount a late charge and deserved a score in the last 5 mins when they were on the WW line but it wasn't to be. 0-42
The final score did not do justice to the effort that most of the KK players put in, but until they put pressure on other teams at the breakdown and secure their own set pieces, particularly the lineout, they will struggle.
