U-19 Rugby - Leinster League In Foulkstown Sat 3rd Oct
Athy/Cill Dara 27
Pitch conditions were perfect for this match, weather was blustery.
Game started very evenly, for first 10 minutes the action was confined to the centre of the pitch. Athy started to get a rhythm going with their pick and go edging their way to Kilkenny's 22. But for good tackling by impressive newcomer Paddy O Kieffe and Shane Brennan they would have scored earlier, Athy were on the Kilkenny line after 12 minutes and looked like scoring but Grahem Delaney first then Denis Hogan robbed the ball, the latter clearing 40ms downfield.
Kilkenny could not get their hands on the ball and Athy continued to turn the screw, their big hard running backs causing Kilkenny a lot of bother and despite heroic tackling from Keiran Ormonde and Peter Walsh, the pressure finally told in the 15th minute. It ended with Athys big centre handing off and crashing over for the first score (not converted) 0-5.
Kilkenny upped their work rate and won a penalty on the ½ way line a good kick brought them into the Athy 22 for the first time, they won the lineout and almost scored with a well worked maul led by Mikey Dunne, Tony Wilson, Hugh O Brien and captain Emmet Lynch.
From the ensuing scrum Peter Walsh charged up the middle and offloaded to Eammon Carroll who beat a couple of defenders to score a fine try, it was converted by Denis Hogan. 7-5 after 20 minutes.
Athy again marched downfield and despite good, albeit desperate, defensive tackling by KK they scored their second try to regain the lead 10-7 after 25 minutes.
Kilkenny started the second ½ against the wind and were put under pressure immediately, a certain try was saved by a great tackle by sub Peter Barrett, Kilkenny broke downfield and Eammon Carroll scored a super try to level things after good work by winger David Mullins, Denis Hogan ,Hugh O Brien and Emmet Lynch.(not converted) 12-12 40 mins.
Athy kicked off and for the umpteenth time KK turned the ball over in contact and Athy scored a quicktry to pull ahead(converted).
19-12 43 mins
Kilkenny then got a bit ragged and conceded a penalty on their 22 which Athy's fine kicker slotted over 22 - 12 50 mins
The game was put beyond doubt when Athy capitalized on a pen to get the final score, a try ( not converted) 27-12
Kilkenny will have to learn from this match, while they showed promise and looked good with he ball in hand but they turned the ball over far too easily and frequently.
