Kilkenny 22-18 Enniscorthy B
The new Kilkenny under 17 side returned to action last Saturday when travelling to play and overcome Enniscorthy B by a score of 22 points to 18 in an entertaining game played between 2 evenly matched teams.
While dominating possession and territory in the early stages Kilkenny conceded the first score, a penalty after 14 minutes. They struck back with their first try after 25 minutes with the forwards winning good ball and Finbar Hayes looped round wing Simon Cuddihy to score under the posts which he converted himself to leave the half time score 7 points to 3.
Kilkenny dominated the early stages of the second half as the forwards started to ruck more effectively and half backs Ronan Corcoran and Hugh lane came strongly into the game.
Alex Neville finished a good break by Hayes and then a Diarmuid Hickey tackle saw Neville gather the loose ball and finish clinically for his second try to leave the score 17 points to 6 with 13 minutes left.
Kilkenny started to clock watch and Enniscorthy struck back to score a try out wide after the Kilkenny defence cracked. Enniscorthy piled on the pressure in the last minutes and in the final minute scored under the posts and converted to leave Kilkenny trailing by one point entering injury time.
To their credit, with the referee calling last play of the game as Kilkenny put in to a lineout on the Enniscorthy 22, the Kilkenny forwards executed a perfect lineout and drive for the only time in the game, and after several pick and drives number 8 Diarmuid Hickey fell over the line to score a deserved winner.
As this side have never played together previously and have a large number of newcomers to rugby this was a confidence building result. While there are many more difficult games ahead, the side will improve every week they play over the season. While everyone gave their all impressive performers were the try scorers; Adam Jordan at full back, Ronan Corcoran at scrum half, Darren Knox at hooker and Mick King at loose head all playing their first games in new positions.
Team: Adam Jordan, Simon Cuddihy, (Alex Stanley), Finbar Hayes, Steve Noonan, Edward Oakes, Hugh Lane, Ronan Corcoran, Mick King , Darren Knox, Darren Bawle (Captain), Jack Quinn, Steve Brennan, Shane O Neill, Liam McWey, Diarmuid Hickey.
