Kilkenny 0-20 Old Belvedere

Kilkenny Ladies squad are struggling with numbers and just about mustered up 15 players to take on Old Belvedere in Division 2 of the Leinster League. Due to injury, work, emigration, retirement we are at an all time low regarding playing numbers. This has had a knock on effect with regards to training and therefore development as a team.

In atrocious conditions Kilkenny Ladies took to the field. On days like this the pre rehearsed game plan goes out the window and the girls had to adapt to the conditions and play accordingly. We competed well for the 1st half. The only difference was the excellent kicking from the Belvo 10 who pushed us back time and time again. Only for the competent play from full back April Purcell things could have been a lot worse.

Half time: Kilkenny 0 Old Belvedere 5

With 10 minutes gone into the 2nd half and Kilkenny attacking in the Belvo 22 a clash of heads between 2 Kilkenny players Aisling McCool and Kathy Walsh resulted. Both suffered cuts to their heads and were swiftly taken to hospital for stitching. This resulted in Kilkenny down to 13 players and an uphill battle against the 15 from Old Belvedere.

Following the resumption of the match Kilkenny Ladies came out with all guns blazing. But after curtailing Belvo's pressure the dam finally burst with 15 minutes to go. Belvedere used their 2 player advantage to good effect and out flanked the Kilkenny defence on 3 occasions to run out 20-5 winners.

There were some excellent individual defensive performances shown by Kilkenny. For the team to improve they have to be able to put the defensive system in which the coaches are trying to implement into practice. The return fixture against Old Belvedere will be eagerly awaited by the girls.
