W: Leinster League, Sunday 14/1/12
Tullow 05-12 Kilkenny
It was a cold and wet Black Gates which greeted the KK ladies on their arrival in Tullow. Knowing traditionally what to expect from our close neighbours KK ladies set themselves up for what would be a war of attrition.
Focused and determined to keep their development on an upward spiral KK took the field. From the kick off the ball was expertly caught by Kathy Walsh who ran direct and with conviction towards the opposition. The ball was recycled and flashed out through a couple of hands. After a few phases the ball was turned over and Tullow tried to inflict some pressure. The KK defence held strong.
With some beautiful passages of play KK forced their way into the Tullow 22 time and time again. Tullow would find it hard to get out. From opposition scrums and line outs KK put huge pressure on the Tullow no.10. With KK lineout working excellently we were able to launch attack after attack. The game was now played within the two 10m lines.
With 20 minutes to go Tullow started to get territorial advantage through their kicker pinning us into the corner.
From a 5m scrum Tullow recycled the ball time and time again. Pressure was building and after a transgression by a KK player a penalty was awarded. KK defence lined up but failed to come up in a line which left a weak side and Tullow didn't fail to exploit and scored a well deserved try. Con missed.
This score led to KK ladies upping their game and from the kick of the showed their intent. Ball carriers led by Kelly McGuinness were running hard and getting over the gain line. With Caroline Mahon from 8 and Kate Hennessy from 10 starting to pull the strings KK started to take over and we dominated possession for the remainder of the half.
Some brilliant counter attacking from kick retrieval from 15 Susan Battle ensured that we could remain in the oppositions half. After a brilliant lineout KK went through 8 phases of play. After some brilliant off loading inside the 22 the ball ended with Mags Hennessy crossing the line. With the ball been greasy the referee deemed the 2nd row knocked the ball on over the line.
Half Time KK 0 Tullow 5
The 2nd half started with Tullow using there bigger pack to soften up the KK pack. When they found that our girls were not in the mood to be bullied they resorted to there excellent kicking game. The first 15 min saw KK defending. With KK defence close to the ruck impregnable Tullow tried to spread it wide. After some sustained pressure KK conceded a penalty. Tullow opted to kick for posts. The resulting penalty was missed and this was really the last time Tullow would be in our 22.
Once KK got into the oppositions half you could see that they were not leaving without a score. After some brilliant attacking and fabulous recycling KK were on the front foot. Only for a lack of composure we would have scored a lot earlier than we did. Eventually we scored through team Captain Kate Hennessy who threw a dummy and accelerated through the gap and sprinted under the posts. Con missed.
With the gander up and full of confidence KK were determined to finish strong. Tullow had other ideas and threw the kitchen sink at KK. A superb defensive effort which was epitomised by a try saving cover tackle by Aisling Moroney.
KK sprung the sick Brona Kelly from the bench onto the wing and she attacked from the start. Time was running out. But with a never say die attitude KK had one last trick up their sleeve. A scrum was given on the half way line leaving a generous blind side. Buggy put it in. Mahon picked up from the base and attacked the blind side. Faced with a 2 v 1 she drew the defender and passed to Kelly. Once Brona gets daylight between her and the try line there is only one winner. With Tullow girls giving it all to get back Brona crossed the line under the post. Con Kelly
Some great performances and great passages of play. Great commitment, passion and never give up attitude by all players.
