J2: Leinster League, Sunday 13/01/13
by Padraic Treacy
Kilkenny Seconds came away deserved winners on Sunday when they comprehensively beat their opponents Mullingar thus reviving their league campaign.
Despite the score line, Kilkenny made hard work of this game in the first half and having missed a number of try scoring chances they finally crossed the line when Ray Pembroke dived over the line in the 35th minute. Five minutes later and right on the half-time whistle, James Blanchfield touched down to give Kilkenny a 12-3 lead going into the second half.
Kilkenny came out all guns blazing and Blanchfield was again lucky to be on the receiving end of a pass and get his second try, putting the game out of reach of the host team. Callinan added the conversion and then it was the turn of the winger Clive Grehan to get his name on the score sheet when he crossed the line twice ending what was a good performance from the Kilkenny squad. Mullingar did manage a late consolation try to bring their tally to 8 points, but not enough to catch the visitors.
Best for Kilkenny was Ronan O’Donoghue who’s experience and leadership was the catalyst for his team’s success on the day.
Kilkenny are also at home on Sunday to Portlaoise. This will be a good preparation game for their Towns Cup encounter with Tullamore on February 3rd. The Seconds kick off on Sunday at 1.00pm.
