J2: Leinster League, Sunday, 9/12/12
by Padraic Treacy
It was double success for the Foulkstowners on Sunday as Kilkenny Seconds scored a very important win over league leaders Gorey. Ronan O’Donoghue with help from his team-mates took on the entire Gorey team and charged through their defensive lines to score his sides two tries which were converted by outhalf Gerry Callinan. His sheer force and presence on the pitch won him the Man of the Match title.
Gorey, however, did get one back in the second half and despite a late flurry from the visitors, Callinan extinguished any hopes they had of a comeback with a superb penalty kick in the 66th minute, thus completing the score line for this encounter.
The Seconds will have to wait until the 13th January to take on their next opponents, Mullingar. With Kilkenny sitting fourth on the table, any hopes of winning the league this season are fruitless. The Christmas break should give them the opportunity to regroup and make up for their slow start to this campaign. Despite this Kilkenny do have a good chance of finishing second or third as long as they keep playing to their capabilities.
