Kilkenny Rugby Football Club - HOME>

Kilkenny Rugby Club held a senior club day last Saturday, 21st August. The day comprised a highly competitive 7s tournament, women’s tag rugby, BBQ, music and most importantly an opportunity for players and friends to get to know one another, that bit better, before the start of the competitive season.

The day was a success in terms of rugby and a social event, with over 50 players involved in the 7s and most of the Women’s senior squad taking part in the Tag games. The team captains and managers had the teams in good shape and this showed in the quality of play throughout the afternoon.

Players’ families, friends and club officials mingled and renewed old acquaintances while enjoying the BBQ and refreshments on a beautiful summer’s afternoon. Club president Quentin Hearne, phoned the club from sunnier climes to ensure all was going well.

The BBQ was run by Brian Hanrahan, who was ably assisted by Orla Henebry, John Phelan, Ivor O'Brien, Philly Ryan and Ballymaloe trained James Blanchfield. The available club members ran a great day of rugby and fun, which will be repeated again during the year. Your support is much needed and appreciated.

A special word of thanks to sponsors Langtons, The Left Bank, Kenna’s butchers and Sonix entertainment. Thanks also to the referees Roger Thomas, Gary Brickell, Michael Leydon and Brian Nolan who officiated on the day. The committee would like to thank all those who helped make the day a great success.

The club acknowledges and applauds the huge efforts made by social secretary Gary Brickell who ran the show with his usual professionalism and aplomb. Gary’s ease at managing these occasions will ensure the club will schedule many similar events.

7s Tournament Winning Team
The 7’s tournament comprised a series of round robin games with a final playoff between the top two teams. This tournament was an integral part of the senior squad’s pre-season preparations giving team coaches the opportunity to evaluate players for Firsts and Seconds selection this week. Well done to all the players who took part, particularly to many of the newcomers who impressed and will, most definitely, provide an increased competitiveness to senior teams’ selection. The women’s squad were delighted to be involved in the Club day and found it to be a most enjoyable experience. The skills demonstrated in the Tag games show how well the women are developing individual skillsets and also how well they are developing as a squad.

The obvious enthusiasm show during the games and throughout the day was infectious and is a welcome addition to the club. The women’s squad are still recruiting new players of all standards. No experience necessary.

The development league competition rules and fixtures list will be published shortly. Potential newcomers should note that games will be played against players of similar abilities and that safety and fair play are paramount.

Training is currently Wednesday night at 7pm, there will be two nights training each week once the league begins.

The club offers its congratulations to all club members who received their Leaving Certificate results last week. We wish you all the very best for your future studies and careers.

Firsts XV regular, Liam Phelan, who also received his Leaving Cert. results, was presented with some club gear by club captain Philip Ryan. The presentation marked Liam’s success as the youngest senior player last season.

Liam hopes to attend Limerick IT and play for Shannon Under-20s next season. If so, Liam will follow in the footsteps of Kilkenny’s Ivor O’Brien, who won senior All-Ireland honours with Shannon RFC, and Ian Dowling who began his Munster career there.

Club referee Gary Brickell has completed a Leinster Branch referee’s seminar recently and has already relayed some new interpretations of rules to the senior coaches. Gary has kindly offered to do the same for the club’s underage coaches. He can be contacted on or 086 348 1040.

Congratulations to Patrick O’Driscoll on being selected for the Leinster U20s squad. The U20s will be coached by Gabriel Fulcher and will play the Leicester Academy before the interprovincial series in September.

The first fixture for both Firsts and Seconds is in the South East League against Enniscorthy at the Ross road grounds, in Enniscorthy. Kick-off is 1.00pm for the Seconds and 3pm for the Firsts.
